چکیده

In most of the engineering applications, such as mining, metallurgy, agriculture; equipments are failed by the abrasive wear. The data as obtained form ministry of Research and Technology indicates that the percentage cost of abrasive wear in federal republic of German in metallurgy industry is 40%, mining industry 30%, agriculture 20% and production engineering 10%, and so the material selection is largely controlled by adequate selection of material and cost effectiveness. The most common material being used at present in India in metallurgical mining and agricultural industries is a plain carbon steel. Particularly mild steel is widely used in agricultural agro machinery industries for the fabrication of agricultural equipment and critical parts, and therefore which wears fast when subjected to high load and abrasive conditions. The present work has been devoted to access the suitability of adequate material properties and structure for agricultural industries. The En 8 is a plain medium carbon steel, En 19 and En 24 is a medium carbon low alloy steels containing molybdenum and chromium in different amount (up to 5% in total) . These steels are cost effective and easily available in local markets in all shapes and dimensions. Moreover their properties can be improved by simple heat treatment. The selected steels were heat treated and their mechanical and Tribological properties have been accessed for their suitability for agro machinery industries. The Tribological properties have been quantitatively estimated by three body abrasion test set-up which is Flex make as per standard specifications of American society of testing materials (ASTM), where the wear caused by abrasive trapped between the two moving surfaces.

Evaluation of Microstructure and Wear Behavior of Iron-based Hard - facing Coatings on the Mo40 Steel

Mo40 low-alloy steels are mostly used to produce industrial components such as crane wheels which are exposed to abrasive wear. However, during working conditions, their wear resistance is reduced after a while due to its low hardness. With increasing abrasive wear, the dimensions of components decrease and they need to be repaired for surface modification. In this regard, hard overlay coatings...

Investigation of Wear Mechanism in Quenched and Tempered Medium Carbon-High Chromium Martensitic Steel Using Dry Sand/Rubber Wheel

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of quenching and tempering temperatures on the microstructure, mechanical properties and the wear characteristics of medium carbon-high chromium wear resistant steel. In addition, the dominant wear mechanisms were studied. For this purpose, austenitizing and tempering temperatures were selected in the ranges of 900- 1000 °C and 300- 500...

Effect of Abrasive Particle Size on Abrasive Wear Resistance in Otomotive Steels

If one of the surfaces which are in touch is rough and hard, it chips the other surface due to relative motion or touching forces. The wear is called two-body abrasive wear. If there are free abrasive particles between the two bodies, the wear is called three-body abrasive wear. The free abrasive particles may be external material dust or the remains of chipping. Usually, the wear starts as a t...

Investigation of Friction and Abrasive Effects in Engineering Steels with Micromagnetic Measurements

Friction and abrasive surface treatment of engineering steels is the new effective tool for surface material strengthening and improving the resistance to fatigue damage. The specific abrasive machining of medium-carbon steel yields formation of surface hardened layer with super dispersed nanocrystal structure which increase the fatigue damage resistance in times. The present study aimed to est...

A Study of the Tribological Properties of Sputter-deposited MoSX/Cr Coatings

In this investigation, MoSx/Cr coatings were deposited by direct-current magnetron sputter onto Ck45 (AISI 1045) plain carbon steel substrates. The MoSx/Cr ratio in the coatings was controlled by sputtering the composite targets. The chemical characterization was performed using EDX (energy dispersive X-ray analysis); the structural characterization was accomplished by X-ray diffraction (XRD) s...
